  1. Usually 20-30 percent, looking at comparable cars.  About half of that is due to there being more energy in a gallon of diesel than a gallon of gasoline.

It can vary a lot, though, since diesel and gasoline engines usually AREN'T very comparable.  Gasoline tends to have higher power and lower torque, while diesel is the other way around.  This generally means diesel will be at a greater advantage under heavy loads, while gasoline will have ...well, less of a disadvantage at higher speeds.

Some of the biggest efficiency gains from going with diesels are seen in trucks, for this reason.

Personally, if you're looking at getting a diesel car, like a VW TDI, I think it would be worth it just to see people freak out when you fill your car up at diesel pumps.

  2. you sure will get more mpg with diesel compared to gas if your buying a truck and plan on hauling a large loads its worth it.

Keep this in mind the diesel is more expensive when first buying one if you need one, if you don't need the power the cost in the long run isnt really worth it.

Diesels like to be run hard and will do just that if you just running around town its really not worth it.

If you live in a cold climate and park outside the milage you gain you also loose in warm up time.

As for car they are designed well and worth the money.

Keep this in mind also if they break its spendy to fix, they normally last far longer than gas engines if taken care of.
