12, until UHF came along.

They were numbered 2-13.  There was once a channel 1, but the frequency was reallocated.

Each city had the three major networks, ABC, NBC, CBS and maybe PBS (I believe it was called NET back then).  If they were lucky there was also an Independent station.

When the President wanted to make an address, the whole night was a loss!
