Question:

About how much can a cruise cost?

I want to know about how much money I should save to go on a cruise. There will be two adults, preferably a 7 day cruise in the Caribbean, I live in Utah so I have to fly to a port, probably in Texas or Florida (that's another question, are there deals on plain tickets when purchasing cruise tickets?)

Keep in mind that meals are free but I want to do some activities at the ports of call, like swimming with dolphins and doing a zip line canopy tour of the jungle, just a few things like that. I also don't care too much about the room size. I basically want a good estimate, and rounded up just in case. Thank you.

  2. You can find a 7 night cruise in the fall (oct or nov) for as low as $1000 at times, but realisticly you should be ready to spend $1500 - $2000 just in case. The earlier you book the cruise and the airfare the better off you will be. The cruise lines do offer air, but it is usually more than you can find with the airline websites. You may be able to find shore excursions cheaper off the ship, but you run the risk of missing the ship with a late excursions or having a bad experience and having no one to complain to. I would recommend you use a travel agent or cruise specialist, like me, to book with and they will find you the best deals and shore excursions.

  3. For a 7 day cruise the lowest price room for 2 will run between $1500 and $2500 for an inside room. An outside room or a balcony can cost much more. Food is included but some ships are now offering first class restaurants at a surcharge for each meal. Tips for the room steward and waiters can cost about $25 per day. Shore excursions can run $50-$100 per person for each tour. Hard drinks on the ship can run $2-$8. Be careful about accepting the welcome drink as you board. It will cost $6-$8 but you keep the glass.

Note that shore excursions can be cheaper if purchased off the ship but if due to a problem it returns late you can miss the ship. The ship waits for all excursions booked on the ship.

Booking months early, even a year early, will give you the lowest prices.

There used to be great deals in the past on flights and hotel before the cruise. They are long gone.

  5. It all depends on when you are traveling but I just wanted to pass this information to you. Do not get your day excursions through the ship. You can search each port through the Internet and save a bunch of money. Make your own plans directly. Also sometimes they have last minute deals. The Caribbean is about $1200 per person ( more if you want a balcony). After the holidays it is almost half price. The air is about 500-600 from Utah to Florida. More during the holidays and a lot less after. There is a web site for people who have gone to various ports and they recommend different sight seeing spots. Usually there is no combination deals for the flight and cruise.

  6. For a 7-day cruise in the Caribbean, at least $1500 each.  More if you drink a lot or like to gamble.

For excursions, you can often go on your own, especially if you have experience in the port or just feel comfortable not having your hand held every step of the way.  Some ports are easier/less-risky than others [DON'T try Jamaica on your own, e.g.].

Go to CruiseCritic.com, "Boards" for lots of information.

Fly to your port the day before the cruise [just in case].

  7. Try www.findvacationsonline.com or www.wiitravel.com for the best cruise rates. They change all the time, its almost impossible to say what it will cost today. Try to book the extra activities online directly with the supplier in the port you will be vistitng, the boat will charge you extra to book it for you.

  8. On the low end, you can get an inside cabin in the off season for about $500 per person for one week.  On the high end a balcony cabin during the high season could run $2000 per person.  Suites are even more expensive.

Typically you are looking at $700 per person for an inside cabins, $900 per person for an ocean view and $1100 per person for a balcony.  Spending for two people, figure $100 per day per person.

  9. Try vacationstogo.com. The prices quoted for cruises are per person not per room. Swimming with the Dolphins is usually $100 to 125 per person.  Zipline is about 60-80. The earlier you book airfare the better and you can get it cheaper if you do it yourself not through the cruiseline.
