About how much does it cost to build a house?

If I wanted to build a house, of about 4000 sq feet, 5drms, 2 livingrooms, 3.5 baths, with stone and siding, plenty of windows (but not way too many) ...maybe even and indoor pool...hardwood floors and carpet....about how much do you think it would cost?

Please answer only if you have experience in construction/building and you have a realistic number, rather than just saying "a lot".

Greatly depends on where you live. In my area, the average home 2500-3500sqf. is between $50 and $75 per sqf. not including the lot(land).  This is for good quality materials, but not marble floors, rock walls $500.00 faucets and fixtures.  Outdoor pools are $30.000-$40.000 on top of that, indoor could be double. Keep in mind labor is half the cost of building,  california $150-$300 per hr per person,  arkansas $10-$30 per hr per person. Choose your material wisely depending on you location.  Don't use western red cedar siding if you live in south florida. If you have family(that you trust) in the construction buisness, plummer, electrician or other, call in some favors you can save thousands. Don't be afraid to barter with your suppliers, they expect it. Suppliers also like large package deals and give better discounts and service for large orders. Like everything else it depends on trim level. If you want to get elaborate you can easily spend 50 to 100 thousand on just the kitchen.

But in your area (if you already own the land) an average house can run as low as $75 per square foot if you are willing to do a lot of the work and contract the house yourself.

I contract all of my building projects and when building, forget about free weekends. You will be surprised what the  loose ends a general contractor has to pick up because something was not written into a contract. But if you can handle this, you can save 30 to 60 thousand dollars on a project your size.

New home construction varies by where you live but the rate is around $115 a square foot so you are looking at about $460,000 that is just for the home though you will also have to by the land and that varies greatly depending on the location
