My husband has been summoned to appear for jury duty on march 25...He has to either call or go to their website the day before to see if he has to go...We would like to make a postponement cause of work it would be a lot of money to lose for even 1 day...On the summons it said you can email them for a postponement...So my question is what should we say in the email?

  1. Rules vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, state to state, so you won't get a final answer here. But keep in mind, if he chooses to lie (or god forbid, try to say some c**p like "I wasn't there, so I'd have to convict") unless he has the storytelling skills of Shakespeare, the judge has heard it, and probably several times. And has his own ways of dealing with people who try to shirk their civic duty.

If he's employed, your jurisdiction may have requirements on his employer to compensate for losing income. If he's self-employed, and can demonstrate it will be a serious financial hardship, particularly because of current circumstances, he may have a shot. Best bet is to be right up front and have a conversation with the court clerk. But he'd better be quick. 3/25 is looming.

  2. I think your husband's employer can't refuse to let him go to Jury Duty and must pay him for the time he spends there. it doesn't sound like a legitimate reason for postponement - unless he had to travel on business or had another trip previously planned and paid for.

  3. Tell the truth. If you get exempted - that's fine, otherwise - do your citizen's duty. One day you need it and you'll be glad other have done it.

  4. Tell the truth, that it would be a financial strain at this time but you would be able to at a later date.

  5. If your man wants to avoid jury duty just have your man say this:  I was not present during the crime, therefore I must find the accused not guilty despite any evidence.

I he has to go, give the "Fully Informed Jury Association" a peek.
