Howard Carter discovered the tomb and spent years removing the artifacts and cataloging them. He lived a normal lifetime. Lord Carnarvon was his sponsor and died soon after the opening of the tomb from an infection. Nothing uncommon about that, antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet.

The whole curse thing is a hoax started by journalists who were envious because they were not allowed to cover the story.
