  1. The lattice energy of an ionic solid is a measure of the strength of bonds in that ionic compound. It is given the symbol U and is equivalent to the amount of energy required to separate a solid ionic compound into gaseous ions.

The Lattice energy, U, is the amount of energy requried to separate a mole of the solid (s) into a gas (g) of its ions.

    MaLb(s) ® a Mb+(g) + b Xa- (g)     U kJ/mol

This quantity cannot be experimentally determined directly, but it can be estimated using Hess Law in the form of Born-Haber cycle. It can also be calculated from the electrostatic consideration of its crystal structure.

  2. The lattice energy of an ionic solid is a measure of the strength of bonds in that ionic compound. It is given the symbol U and is equivalent to the amount of energy required to separate a solid ionic compound into gaseous ions. Lattice energy can also be considered as the energy given off when gaseous ions form an ionic solid. It is dependent on ionic charge and the ionic radius: as the charge of the ions increases the magnitude of the lattice energy increases (becomes more negative), and as the radius decreases (the ions in the ionic solid move closer together) the lattice energy increases.

Lattice energy is used primarily in respect to inorganic, crystalline solids. It cannot be determined directly but can be calculated by using experimental data in the Born Haber cycle or from theoretical calculations.

Lattice energy is inversely related to the distances of ionic bonds.

  3. let me make it simple.

for the formation of an ionic bond the ions should occupy the lattice points of a cubic crystal.the lattice points inculde the inner center of the cube, centers of the faces of the cube, centres of the sides of the cube and the edges of the cube.

the energy required for the ions to occupy the lattice points is called lattice energy.it can be determined by other ways like born-haber cycle (thermodynamics),etc....

  4. Lattice energy is the energy released during the formation of an ionic bond.

when a bond formation takes place it has to overcome the intra atomi forces and after formation also energy released the energy remained after the compensation is the lattice energy
