thanks to all who responded,.My son has recently demonstrated how easy it is to use the camera(any camera) with a card of the type used by that camera to hook up to the Pc so avoiding the need to use a card reader,This is all very well, but I find it more convenient to remove a card from the camera and then use a permanently attached reader to view the contents(photos)

.Rather than argue any further with him .....I shall search, as has been suggested and( I hope)find a reader which will accomodate all types of cards..thanks again to all my readers ...williet

  1. Taking the memory card out more is just more wear and tear on the camera and the card, but if you want to take the card out and read it and not use up battery power then yes you schould get a card reader. But if your going to be using a variety of different memory cards and cameras and have to install all the software for it, which is just a big headache, then your schould get a reader. But if it is only for one or two memory cards then you schouldnt get one.

  2. Just stick with what your camera will use.  SD for older P&S cameras (2GB and under capacity) or SDHC for newer P&S cameras (4GB and higher capacity)

You can find SD / SDHC card readers for under $10.  4 in 1 or higher combination readers can cost up to $30 ... you will not need them.
