Question:

About my crutches?

I have been on crutches for over a year and most of that time in a full leg cast. I have remained very active and many people ask about my condition, especially children who ask mom about that lady. I am always receptive to questions and usually strike up a conversation for several minutes. But, some people approach looking like they want to ask and are embarrassed to do so, or afraid of offending me. I give them a big smile and go on. Shuld I engage them in conversation? I really do not mind talking aboiut what I have. Thanks for your answers.

  1. Aren't people strange?  It's like they think that you haven't noticed your crutches and if they ask you about them, you'll see them for the first time and get all upset.

If someone seems hesitant, you could say something like, "It's been a long year on these crutches!"  If you mention it first, they might be more likely to ask the question they want an answer to.

  2. I  have noticed the same thing and use the same approach as you.  I know that most people view me with apathy and a big smile relieves that, and says that I am okay.  Recently, I was in an elevator using  my crutches at the medical center when a young girl, maybe 5 to 7 years old entered.  Both her legs were in casts up to her knees.  One was completely enclosing her toes, the other extended over her toes with the end open and she was able to walk on them.  She looked at my single leg and said "Wow!  You have a real problem."  I was blown away by her remark and responded "But with both legs in a cast, you have double the problem as I."  The door opened and she walked out, turned "But I don't need those things to walk."  All I could do was smile as all eyes were on me.

  3. Many folks just don't know what to say.. facing someone on crutches, in a wheel chair or with an illness just overwhelms some with a feeling that they could be that person, and they can't think of anything to say.  It's good you can put them at ease.. :)

  4. people don't like to appear nosey.......................... for fear of upsetting you .........however if your bright and cheery and say hi I'm sure it would break the ice
