  1. I have the perfect site!!!!

All the items mentioned are made using things around your house =cheap +fun!

    http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm

    check it out!

  2. make the ultimate rat heaven - find some card board and be creative , make him a hamock from an old pilow case and hang it from either sides of the cage , he can sleep there and if you make him a little pen from cardboard (almost like an obsticle course) and he can play in that and he can also eat it , put like some bedding in it so its comfy for him x i love rats but my mum is scared so she wont let me get one:@( bye hope i helped x

  3. How about a nice cushion made of cloth and stuffed with straw? Its all non toxic. Other than that, they'd eat anything from plastic to bricks.

In his cage you can give him a nice little wooden house as they tend to like dark places.

  4. well rat can eat almost anything but a well-fed rat will not just chew but play around and propably sleep.use iron or any metal coated with shining materials for the cage.and observe for a week,am sure your pet will find you a good owner.

  5. Rats pretty much chew on anything.  It really depends on your rat.  My rats love chewing holes in fabric but don't chew on plastic items.

Here's a great site about making your own toys and hammocks and whatnot:

You can make hammocks out of old rags, old pj pants, etc.  Hanging tubes can be made out of old sweatshirt arms, cheap fabric, etc.  You can hang it up with heavy duty safety pins, shower curtain rings, etc.  Don't use zip ties as my rats chewed through them like nobody's business.

Also check out this forum thread on Ferret Nation cages.  There's tons of pictures for ideas as to how to do up your cage.

It sounds like you only have one rat.  You should really consider getting a second.  Rats are very sociable creatures and really need a buddy to be psychologically healthy.  Some people say that having two together increases the lifespans of both.  Plus it's not a big deal to have a second rat.  You probably won't need a new cage, just a little more food and that's about it.  They use the same litter/bedding, toys, sleep spots, etc.

If you are interested, you should first check out your local humane society.  When they do have rats, they are usually there for many months before getting adopted.  The cost is usually about the same, but your money will go toward helping other animals instead of to a large corporation.

Here's also some good sites to do some research on rat ownership:

    Hope that helps!
