  1. set the dial to the ohms (upside down U) position, and touch the probes together - the meter will say 0 - this means you have a continuos circuit.  If there is a resistance between the two, it'll say how much.

1 - always have circuit unpowered, using ohms range

2 - when using amps range, never connect accross power supply, - must be inline with circuit

3- your first meter should be real cheap. you'll make mistakes 1&2 & end up with only the volts range working

4 - never let anyone borrow your meter , let them ruin their own meter learning how to use one.

I won't even borrow mine to people who know how.

you can also test for continuity with the volts scale - if current is flowing THRU, there will be a voltage ACROSS each part.

-resistors  resist AC or DC current

          - capacitors  mostly block DC, resist  AC current

          - coils mostly block AC, resist DC

          - three terminal devices (transistors & ?)are like kind of like a resistor, third wire controls how much resistance

I asked an electrician a similar question one time, he had a good answer " you're going to have to hit the books"
