  1. Most universities have a physics department.

To do your own research, you need a PhD.

To teach (like at a community college), you need a masters

To work as a technician, you need a bacheloriate degree

I don't know how many there are--maybe tens of thousands or a hundredk?

They work in universities and labs and observatories and in industry.  Many people with physics degrees work outside of physics in some kind of engineering or a related field or even in business.

Almost all branches of physics deal with quantum mechanics to some extent.  You'll study the topic plenty as an undergrad and plenty more in grad school if you choose to pursue physics.

  2. Pretty much every university offers at least a bachelors degree in physics.  If you want to work as a physicist, doing research and/or teaching at the college level, you'll need a PhD in physics.  There are more than 100 universities in the US alone offering graduate studies (masters and PhD) in physics.  Physicists work all over the place - universities, national labs, government jobs, industry, development, hospitals, NASA, department of defense, etc.

Quantum physicist would fall under the heading of theoretical physics.  There aren't as many jobs in that, since it's not practical enough for most companies to bother investing in the research for long-term.  Most theoretical physicists work at universities or national labs like Oak Ridge.

A PhD in physics takes about 6.5 years on average, according to the American Physical Society (APS).  They have more statistics on their website.  That's not counting the bachelors degree, but it does include the masters.
