About postdating checks

Question

If you go to the store and buy something with a check can the bank legally cash the check if it is dated for 3 days later?

The reason I ask is because is because one time I got paid a day early and the bank said they couldn't cash my check till the next day because of the date.

The check is not negotiable, that means it cannot be paid until the date of the check at the earliest
