Question:

About pregnancy and lactating?

I am 34 weeks pregnant and am not able to express colostrum. I know I shouldn't be worried about this my dr and plenty of books have already assured me that it's fine and normal but I can't help being a little worried. I do get a little bit of colostrum leak from my nipples occasionally so I know it's there. The thing is I have been putting lansinoh (pure lanolin) on my nipples daily from very early in the pregnancy as my mum said that's what she did and she fed 3 of us for 2yrs each so I think her advice must be alright. The midwives at my hospital also suggested doing this recently but of course I already was which they said was great. A friend of mine who has two children told me that she found the lansinoh blocked her up and she couldn't use and I'm wondering if that is something I should be concerned about? Could my not being able to express anything be from my milk ducts being blocked or am I just stressing about nothing? As I said I've already asked my dr and midwives and they've all recommended the product and don't seem worried, but I'm after anyone's personal experiences...

  1. You are worrying for no reason.  Everyone is different and some women don't lactate.  I never lactated while I was pregnant and I was able to breastfeed just fine.  don't stress!

  2. I never leaked or lactated while pregnant and have successfully breastfed my daughter for 2 years.  No need to worry.

  3. your stressing about nothing. You can possibly not express anything until the day the baby is born. I was one who started expressing at 4months so by 34weeks i was leaking colostrum. Everyone is different. If you try to hard to get it to come out its going to start to hurt(just from all the tugging and such) just be patient your body was designed to beable to feed a child. It will come,no worries.

  4. I haven't used the stuff yet but I can tell you that with my pregnancies I only leaked maybe a drop a week or so until a few hours before my boys were born then I got a little more leaking going on.  The major leaking didn't happen until they were 2 days old and I ended up with a great milk supply.  This time around I am 33 weeks today and noticed leaking but it is only a very small amount, enough to be noticeable when i looked at my nipples and the Dr said that even if I never leaked a drop before the birth I would probably still get in a milk supply so not to worry either way.  So I would say just relax because we don't have to leak in order to have a milk supply come in.
