Question:

About purity rings???

So, I was thinking about getting a purity ring.

My mom agreed to buy me one, as long as it's under $50 because she likes the idea.

I've also decided I'm looking into Christianity. Not definitely becoming Christian, but I'm considering it deeply.

So, I was wondering...

Can you make out when you're wearing a purity ring?

Can g*y people wear purity rings?

Or, tell me about your experiences with these rings.. did you break it? Was it a good idea? Etc.

Thanks!

  1. I wore a purity ring for many years and it was meaningful to me.  To me it was just a visual reminder of the promise I made to not have s*x until I got married.  People talk about getting tattoos to commemorate a lost one or to remind them of a difficulty they overcame in life like drugs or prison.  In both cases its just a symbol and a reminder of your decision.  I wore it when I'd make out with my boyfriend/now husband because I was still honoring my pledge to not have s*x.

I was able to remain a virgin until marriage (age 31) and it was amazing to be able to give that gift to my husband who had also waited for me.

My ring was a simple, plain band that no one would have known was a purity ring--it meant something to me, but wasn't anyone else's business.

God bless you, and I wouldn't post on here too much.  You'll find a lot of cynical, negative people that are eager to beat you down.

  2. why do you need a purity ring? if you wan tot save yourself that's your business, why do you need to show people?

    edit: agree with Pirate.

edit 2: do you really need a ring to remind yourself?

  3. A ring is a symbol. You "can" do anything you like while wearing it.

Married people the world over make out and commit adultery while wearing their wedding ring.

If the decision isn't in your heart, the ring won't make a bit of difference.

  4. You can only have oral or anal s*x.

  5. Making out while wearing a purity ring is up to you. Does it fit your definition of sexual purity? Purity rings aren't necessarily Christian.

Why could g*y people not wear purity rings? It sounds like you're saying g*y people are fundamentally impure, which is a pretty bigoted claim.

I never had a purity ring. I never wanted to own one, since advertising whether or not I'd had s*x seems like a strange idea. I'm still a virgin (told only for the purity-ring worth/decision bit, not to advertise. ;) I'm also g*y.

  6. I don't understand why anyone needs to buy a ring in order not to have s*x.  It sounds like cheap consumerism to me.  And, as others have asked, what is the appeal of advertising your sexual behaviors to the world?

  7. Considering the fact that over 90 percent of people who make abstinence pledges go on to have premarital s*x, you can apparently do whatever you want while wearing a purity ring.

    Just please use a condom.

  8. I personally think the whole "purity ring" thing is a bit creepy.  I'd rather have my daughters have a good understanding of s*x, potential consequences, why it's better to wait until their ready, how why to use birth control, etc.

Purity rings just seem like a way of parents avoiding their responsibilities.

  9. The purity ring is just a symbol, a physical reminder of a promise, vow or an oath.

What makes it a ring a purity ring then is your honor and integrity to keep that vow.

    Easier said then done.

Because of this fact.. A g*y people can CERTAINTLY wear a purity ring. In fact I think it would be a very healthy and wonderful thing.

Because a purity ring is about a special vow... you don't even need to be christian.  A jewish person, an atheist, etc. could wear a purity ring. Of course the name "purity ring" has obvious Christian connotations to it..so other groups might call it something else.

If you aren't into jewlery.. your mom could buy you anything because it is the vow which matters.

She could buy you a purity purse or a purity cellphone it doesn't matter. hehehehhehehe

Rings are traditional only because they are beautiful and 'precious'

You can "make-out" with a purity ring. How far you go depends mostly on the limits you set for yourself or possibly some limit your mom requests and that you agree to.

You (and probably your mom) know yourself best.  So you might put some limits on what you do and don't do, so that you don't temp yourself beyond your ability to say NO. You may also put limits as to not confuse your boyfriends.

Your mom may have some experience in this matter and might be able to suggest some limits to keep you from temptation.

Personally.. my wife had a purity ring and while I didn't, I still made the same vow to myself.  Personally, it was the BEST decision we both made. Our marriage is VERY strong because we KNOW how to put off instant gratification for a Bigger goal. We also know how to respect each other's boundaries and not tempt each other or disrespect the other's decision.  We also don't have any insecurities about our bodies because we don't have anyone else to compare it to.

Everything we know.. we found out from each other...this STRENGTHENS our bond.  We also learned how to communicate our love in other non-physical ways which increased our verbal and written communication skills.

Why does God put limits on what he wants us to do or not do with our bodies... well there are actually a lot of NON-spiritual reasons that this is a good idea.

For one thing.. statistically, most domestic violence cases are between 2 non-married people who are co-habitating and having s*x.  Therefore, you can reduce your chances of being a vitcim of domestic violence that way.

Secondily, statistically, couples who wait 'til they are married have a lower instance of divorce then those who don't.  So you give yourself a slightly better chances of having a lasting marriage by waiting. Sociologists and Psychologists owe this to the couples ability to respect each other and put off instant gratification, something that is importnant in a long term marriage.

Couples who weight also rate their over all happiness and self esteem higher when compared to the general public.

So these are some of the non-spiritual reasons why I think God didn't want us to be sleeping around. - there are other reasons I am sure.

  10. I think it's cheap to advertise your sexuality.  With whom, when, and how you choose to have s*x is your personal business.  Nobody else cares or wants to see your flashy claim of being better than them because you follow one path that they may not follow.

It's just trying to say you're better than other people and it's cheap.  I wouldn't be so cliche and desperate for approval.

  11. These rings are meaningless and Christianity is more harmful than good. It is better to be your own person, make up your own mind, and live your life in your own way.

You can be chaste without the symbol and you can be a good person without Christianity.

  12. Purity rings, it's just a thing. Symbol and reminder.
