were mailed to us. But New York Life has us sign a paper and then today we got something from them saying how much each of us is to recieve, but no check. Instead it says: "your check will be delivered by our agent shortly". Does that mean in person? We live out of state whereas my siblings live in the state of the insured. What will happen if it is to be hand delivered since we are out of state?

  1. Let the insurance company worry about it.

  2. They do this because they want the saleman they send to try and convince you to invest it with them. Its a standard procedure used by every life insurance company. If you request to have the cheque mailed to you wherever you are they cannot refuse you. Its YOUR money, they will do what you tell them. Don't forget that.

  3. Most likely the insurance companies will mail the check to the beneficiary if they don't have an agent in the local area.  The reason they normally like to hand deliver the check is for customer service procedures. Insurance agent  understand the loss and will help answer any question that might come up.  Also guide you in the right path for making sure uncle SAM doesn't take any of the benefits.
