About returning an item without the recipt?

I got a sweatshirt for my bday and it dosent fit and i want to return it and can the store let me return the item if i dont have the recipt and just say its was a bday gift?

It depends on the store.  Sometimes the store will let you return it, but only for a store credit, or they may let you trade the sweatshirt for one that fits.  It never hurts to ask.
