Question:

About rose bushes and Japanese beetles ?

I noticed a beetle on my rose bush this week. I knocked it off the flower and let it go, not realizing what it was. I saw it, or another, again today on another flower on the same rose bush, and knocked it on the grass and squashed the little bugger. Are these something that there will be a lot of ? Or are they few ? I read some info today about how destructive they can be, but I don't know if I will find a lot of them and will need some type of spray, or if I can control them by squishing or drowning them in soapy water ? I have only 3 rose bushes, and 1 flowering almond. They don't seem to care about my veggie garden.

  1. These beetles are really annoying and they can damage the plant by eating the leaves.  Just get a little container of water and put in a drop of liquid soap to break the water tension.  Then go out in the evening and knock the beetles into the water to drown them.  What ever you do, do NOT get those traps that you hang in your yard.  For every one bug that the bait attracts and falls into the trap there are three that are attracted and don't fall into the trap.  They only seem to like a few different kinds of plants though, so just look around your yard for the plants they like.  They're easy to find and easy to kill.

  2. A few beetles are not a problem. This is a good year for them.Squashing them is OK,but keep them off the ground when you do.The eggs will still become grubs and the grubs become beetles.I do not spray anymore, the birds now come and have them for lunch.

  3. All the replies here are great.  I use the soapy water method, too.  I would just like to add that Knockout Roses are very resistant to Japanese Beetles.  They also are resistant to black spot. You might think about adding these to your garden.  No need to chase down the beetles  :)

  4. you can control them by picking and drowning them. They are pretty stupid. It is best to do it in the evening, because they are less active and will just sit there for you. This is what I have been doing. after the first 3 days, I only go out once or twice a week now.

  5. Have you tried Confidor put out by Yates.  Very safe spray.  My Hibiscus bush had hibiscus beetles in the flowers and Confidor got rid of them, you might have to give another spray after 10 days to make sure they are gone.

  6. put a littlr bit of rubing alch1tablespoon and halve  into 3 quarts of soapy watrer and wash .It will kill them. They will destroy your roses
