I'm 16 and used to be able to buy cigarettes in the UK but now I can't. I'm going to my house in italy next week and i want to know-

1.) whether i can buy them there (i.e. am i above the legal age?)

2.) How much am i allowed to take back to the UK?

3.) If i take some in my suitcase will I be searched (thus facing the wrath of my parents)

Thank you :)

  1. legal age.... i think not.. there are machines outside the tabbachi with no restrictions at all.... anyone can buy them from 2-200...

there is a law here but as most thing in italy nobady takes any notice what so ever....

  2. I was never carded in Italy. I used to go get them for my dad when I was about 15. When I travel I pack them in my suitcase so that I don't have to buy any when I land. If you check in your bags then they shouldn't have to search your bags unless they are packed suspiciously, but I don't know how you could do that :)

  3. you can buy cigarettes in italy by the age of 2 years old :D it's not a joke!

    i'm italian

  4. stop smoking

  5. i'm italian and i can say u that u can always buy cigarettes, even if you're 10 years old... it's forbidden smoking in public places (i think that in all the europe there's this ban)

  6. Although I believe the legal smoking/buying age in Italy itself is 18, that won't cause you too much of a problem because no one will care particularly, you're unlikely to be asked for ID, and the police won't take any notice of some kid smoking.

However, if you attempt to take cigarettes out of the country, you may then encounter problems, as smaller laws are obviously taken more seriously at airports, etc, than in small shops where the main aim is to make money.

In short, you'll be fine smoking in Italy, however, I wouldn't advise trying to take them home.

  7. Ok, the naked truth: you have to be 16 years old to buy cigarettes so you're old enough and it's false that they won't ask for ID's (in the previous years the law wasn't really effective but now tobacco sellers run serious risks if they are caught by selling cigarettes to under 16); I can't tell you how much you are allowed to bring in the UK but I'm sure that there's no risk for your suitcase to be checked if you carry JUST cigarettes :-)

  8. 1) quit smoking

    2) selling tobacco to under 16 of age in Italy is forbidden by law since 1936

    3) you can take up to 2 boxes of 10 packs each in your bag. The italian cigarettes the MS are the cheapest 3,50€

  9. Random stop and searches are always a possibility.
