  1. The penalty charge will depend on where you got the ticket, and what the laws are in that area.  Usually, the rate is set by the city or county government.  Your best course of action in following up is to contact the office which deals with ticket resolutions (often it is listed on the ticket somewhere) and find out what your choices are.  Sometimes you can attend "traffic school" instead of paying a fine.  Almost always, you can choose to go to court to "fight" the ticket.  There are also some law offices which will promise to fight the ticket for you.  Here are the usual results:  If you go to court, you generally do not win unless you can prove (with videotape or witnesses) that you did not deserve the ticket.  It's generally a waste of time and money.  If you hand the ticket over to a lawyer who promises to "get you off," you will end up paying in lawyer fees an amount equal to what the ticket would cost.  In addition, some of the lawyers do not handle the case well, and simply "postpone" the ticket, leaving you still in trouble.  If you go to traffic school, it can cost you as much as the ticket, but you usually get the violation erased from the record.  Your best choices, usually, are to pay the ticket outright and forget about it, or arrange for traffic school.  You should consider lawyers and courts, however, if you have a lot of violations and are in danger of losing your license.  (Remember, I am NOT a lawyer -- just a goof who has some experience with traffic tickets.)

  2. In Indiana they give you a half sheet that tells all of the costs for different offenses. You might try calling the police department to find out.

  3. Standard fines would be $4 per mile over the limit plus court costs.  That means in your case $100 plus court costs.  However, when the charge of unsafe speed is added, the judge has the option of increasing the fine up to $1,000, at their discretion.

My advice would be to hire a lawyer.

  4. If it is just a ticket you can pay, the price would be on the ticket. Sounds like you are required to appear in court. This changes the fines with the judge who presides over your case.
