Question:

About storing boat gas?

I use a fuel stabilizer in my mixed gas and never save it from one season to the next, but what I am wondering, is it desirable to get the cans out of the sun? Does the hot/cold cycle cause any difference in storing fuel? Currently the cans and tank are in my boat, out in the elements.

  1. The air in the tanks is what you should be aware of. Because the air is what expands in the tank causing it to be under high pressure.

It is best to keep your tanks out of the elements. Perhaps in a cool dry place out of the sun. We keep our tanks outside on the Zodiac deck. But all the other boats around keep them either under the seats, or front covers out of the sun.

It may be best to keep the air valves on your tank open, so pressure does not build up through the hot cold cycle.

I'm not sure what type of engine or gas containers you are using, but i hope this helps.
