  1. Just because you have a math degree doesn't meen that they will give you an emergency certification.  It depends on the school district, and this will usually only be in pretty poor districts.  I tried to do this in Pittsburgh with a degree in Secondary Ed. Math, but no certification, and they said "no".  You will have to ask at the local school board.

You can probably find a master's program that can be completed within a year.  You could possibly even do this as an online course.

  2. All states that I know of require certification in order to become a teacher, but it's easier to get it if you already have some sort of degree. This link should be really helpful in finding out your state's requirements:

  3. I would say yes, because your degree is in math, that's in high demand. They will higher you with an intent to complete your teacher's certification. it really depends on the principal, you really have to win them over. There's lot of competition but, it is possible!

  4. Yes....since math is a high demand profession you can start applying and during your interview you can advise them that you are in the process of getting an emergency certification. Now, depending on the state, you can still get a job with what you have right now. You are still going to need to get a certificate, so   find out through your principal about what they feel is the best way for you to go.

  5. I don't think they do emergency certificates anymore with NCLB-Highly Qualified Teacher requirements.  I think you are limited to a transitional plan (like Transition to Teach) where you take classes in conjunction with getting practical experience to earn your certificate.  I am not sure, but you might also be eligible to do something like "Teach for America" where you sign on to a high-risk area and do a transitional program for your certificate.  But I am pretty sure you can't do the emergency license unless you are already licensed in another related subject and have a job in a district where no one else can teach the class (for example, a speech class when you have an English degree without the speech endorsement). Hope this helps!
