What happens if you don't replace the reciever on the telephone? Would it destroy the phone's connection permanently?

I was just wondering because I plan to use it as a way to prevent recieving phone calls at certain times. Please help?

I don't know what the parts of a telephone are called so I'm gonna describe them as best as I can.

On an ordinary land line telephone, what would happen if you don't replace the part you pick up (to talk and listen with) back to the plunger part (where you dial the numbers)? In other words what would happen if you don't replace the phone after using it and just leave it until the dial tone disappears? Will it destroy the phone? Will you lose connection permanently?

I was kinda thinking I could use it as a way to prevent receiving telephone calls at certain times... Please help!

I hope somebody understands what I'm trying to ask here. I've been thinking really hard how to ask this in the first place with me not knowing the parts of a telephone in the first place!

Help!

  1. Don't worry about it.  After a few seconds the phone will receive an alarm, which you can ignore, then it will go silent.  No one will be able to call in.  And the phone company doesn't care.

It is easier just to unplug the phone.  Callers will just hear it ring with no answer.

  2. It shall not damage to the phone, but phone company does not like every body doing this way. Because it shall load up the phone line capacity (occupy one phone line). Phone company shall cut off your phone line if you unhook the phone within a certain time limit.

  3. I don't think it would damage anything.  Might be easier to unplug the phone line or turn the ringer off at those times.

  4. after a short time you get the "off hook" tones. a very fast beep that you can hear. it will not hurt anything.
