  1. Maximum range is about 2,000 meters for an M44, but because of the shorter
barrel, practical aiming is limited to 1,000 meters. What you want for greater range accuracy is the 91/30 model that has the longer barrel & 2,000 meter sights. Start with a new 91/30, still in the crate & still coated with cosmoline preservative. Then clean it with gun cleaner inside & out to remove the cosmo. Last Sunday, April 18, 2010 I shot a quarter at half a football field with this model Mosin Nagant, no scope, just the iron sights.
A quarter is the size of the head of a pin at half a football field.
Most Mosins are perfect right out of the box, but you may have to adjust the front sight if the gun shoots left or right. The Mosin has the same advantage that all bolt action rifles have and this is that the barrel & chamber are one piece & on the same centerline. There are a few secrets to get the Mosin to shoot as accurately as any rifle. I'll give you a few here.
Iron sights are more accurate than any scope because scopes have verticle & horizontal adjustments which add two more aiming variables of which you already have enough of. Another secret is that you place the side of your face against the rifle butt to take aim... Everyone's face is a different size except for maybe identical twins. What I use to correct this is mink furr stapled to the rifle stock where my face touches. I use enough thickness of this so that my right eye lines up in a perfect straight line with the two Mosin sights. If you have a "fat" face you may have to smooth the stock down on a sander to achieve this. If you are lucky, your face is already perfect & your eye lines right up. After this, buy a 1,000 rounds of ammo & practice. Be sure to spray Windex down the barrel to clean-out the corrosive powder residues & oil the barrel well to prevent any corrosion. Because the Mosin has military rifling & uses high powered military cartridges, it will out perform any civilian rifle & is probably one of the finest rifles for accuracy ever made.
