About the NL Cy Young Award?

Question

Why is Edinson Volquez basically the only person people gtalk about for the award. As I Cubs fan, I'm not trying to seem biased, but Dempster and Zambrano have been just as good. Let's compare the simplest stats, ERA and W-L.

Volquez: 12-4 2.77 ERA

Zambrano: 12-4 2.80 ERA (just .03 higher than Volquez)

Dempster: 11-4 2.99 ERA (not including tonight's game vs. Brewers where he gave up just 1 ER in 7 IP, probably will get the win)

I'd vote for Tim Lincecum: 11-3 2.78 ERA 156 K's

But, I'd also throw Brad Lidge's name in that bunch:

26 saves in as many opportunities, 2.15 ERA, 2 wins

i think that in the end brandon webb will win it, he might get to 20 wins and will be one of the leaders in era once again...lincecum would be second for me, then volquez, who should get more credit for his 12 wins considering he pitches for a much worse team...but volquez definitely deserves the consideration, as do zambrano and dempster as well

Volquez does deserve high remarks, but he isn't the clear cut front runner. I agree that Zambrano and Dempster should get more attention for the Cy Young, but the fact that they are on the same team will make it difficult. You also shouldn't forget about Tim Lincecum whose been just as good those other guys.

Yes those three are all good, but what about Tim Lincecum?? He deserves a ton of credit and should win the Award!

I dont think volquez is that good, he's and ace and all but he doesnt last long in the game.  Hes like harden, except he gets less strikeouts and gives many walks.  I really think Lincecum should get the cy young.  

Dempster and Zambrano just dont have cy young stats right now.

Dempster:

6th in wins

7th in ERA

7th in win percentage

9th in BB

6th in WHIP

7th (probably tied) in CG

Zambrano:

3rd in wins

5th in ERA

4th in win percentage

8th in IP

11th in WHIP

These are great stats, but not cy young stats.  Keep in mind that they are also pitching for a winning team who gives lots more run support, while lincecum/volquez certainly do not.

Wow how can you even talk about Cy Young candidates and not even include Brandon Webb. Cliff Lee and Webb are probably the only guys who could get to 20 wins this season, and Webb always has a consistent ERA(always around 3).

I agree that Dempster and Zambrano are worthy candidates but you not inlcuding Tim Lincecum and Brandon Webb in this discussion is ignorant.

I would say Dempster just because of what opponents are hitting off of him which is .208. Then after him don't foget about Webb.

I think it will be Volquez or Lincecum and I'm leaning towards Lincecum.

Volquez has a slightly better ERA as you showed and more K's, but I also think Lincecum will end up with the award.
