About the name "Delilah"

I am wondering about this name. Does it have some cultural value?

It seems the name keeps being associated with street women. I ask because I've seen a corelation in songs, like "Hey There Delilah" where, in the video, the girl the guy praised the most turned out to be working in the streets (or it's assumed). And one of P!nks video's "U Ur Hand" The name "Lady Delilah" appears in a bunch of personal items, the song itself doesn't say "Delilah" but the woman P!nk is portraying in that song is of a more rought woman.

Was there ever a character in history, like a madame, that gave this association with the name? Did the name first appear in a story? Old name, old texts?

Or maybe is it all just a coincidence?

  1. Delilah is a character in the Bible, actually, and not a very honorable one.

Delilah was a very beautiful woman, and valued money over the love of her husband.

Samson was a very strong, religious man devoted to God. He had never once cut his hair because of his dedication to God. He fell in love with Delilah.

Delilah, however would rather betray him than be happy with his love that he gave her.

You see, Samson had been in the process of setting Israel free of the Philistines. And so, the Philistines persuaded Delilah to betray Samson and to trick him into telling her the secret to his strength in exchange for large sums of money.

Delilah, valuing money more than this man's love, teased him a few times asking him what his secret was. Teasingly he would give a fake answer. This happened many times and Samson finally gave up and told her: His hair had never once been cut due to his decotion to God. That was it.

So one night, when Samson fell asleep, Delilah had a man shave his head, bound him up and when she woke him, called the Philistines in to destroy him. Now that his strength had left him, he could not free himself from the ropes. The Philistines took him captive.

And that is the last we hear of Delilah. Maybe it's a punishment to the name due to her evil nature in the Bible?

You can find more information on Google, I'm sure.

    Hope I helped!
