I heard there are points given for the olympics 400 for the winner... what happens next year? do these points get removed after the 52 weeks time? or they remain until the next olympics? I mean the winner cannot possibly defend those points next year? what's the rule?

and if federer wins it nadal will no longer be #1, will he?

  1. Yes, the players lose after 52 weeks automatically. ATP point system applies to where ever you earned the points. Sadly, Federer will not be # 1, even if he wins the Olympics. On 8/18th, Nadal will be a little over 1000 points ahead of Federer. We'll see what happens at the US Open.

  2. When the points come off on August 18 Rafa will at least be 500+ points ahead of Roger, so even if Fed wins Rafa is still number 1. Probably till Madrid at the earliest is when Roger can get number 1, because for him to become number 1 at the Open, Rafa has to lose first round Olympic lose before the 4th Round of the Open and then Roger has to win both the US and the Gold.

The points will get removed next year for the Olympics,  because the points are calculaed on a 52 week basis, so seen as there is no Olympics next year the players cannot defend their points.

  3. Good Question it says on the atp website that Nadal will rise to No. 1 for the first time in his career August 18. That is when the 500 points roger got from last years cincy gets removed. That Federer will have 6180 and Nadal will still have 6455. Then with the olympics federer will have to get gold giving him 6580 points and Nadal will have to loose in the quarter finals or less. Giving Nadal 6555 points at most. So it is very unlikly that Federer gets his #1 spot so soon. But anything is possible. Hope this helps.
