I know about the greenhouse effect and even though I know that the world is not going to end in my lifetime but I am still worried, Is the amount of carbon dioxide increasing or decreasing? How long will this world last at the rate of carbon dioxide that is still being released every day despite all the warnings that people have received?

  1. How long will this world last at the rate of carbon dioxide that is still being released every day despite all the warnings that people have received?

Let's hope scientists will never have to find out the answer to this question.

  2. CO2 is increasing as it’s constantly being emitted faster than it can be taken up by plants and other sources. However, CO2 is a naturally occurring gas in our atmosphere, so don’t worry.

In the past our atmosphere has been comprised almost entirely of CO2, and it was the appearance of plants (who breathe CO2 in like we breathe in oxygen, and exhale oxygen like we exhale CO2,) that lowered it and raised the level of oxygen. We couldn’t survive in that sort of environment, but we don’t need to worry. Even if all oxygen production were to suddenly and stop on earth, we’d have thousands of years before we actually “ran out” of what was already present in our atmosphere.

CO2 production and “destruction” (plants transform CO2 to oxygen, oceans can store dissolved CO2, CO2 is required in certain reactions that destroy it, etc,) is a natural cycle on earth. We actually require it in various amounts. The question scientists are asking now is, how much can the atmosphere take before we start to see drastic global climate change issues? We’re nowhere near a level where CO2 could be considered “deadly” outside of effects it may have toward our global climate.

It’s also important to remember that the earth is fairly resilient. While we may produce toxins or substances that can harm our chances of survival on earth, there will always be a way for the earth to bounce back and produce life. It may not be the life we’re used to, and we may not be around to see it, but it will definitely be there!
