I had about 15k in debt and the got really really sick. I lost my job because I was in the ER at least once every two weeks.

I now have around 20k in debt and about 30-40k in medical bills because of no insurance. What should I do? How do I get started?

  1. The first thing you should do is to find an attorney who will file the bankruptcy for you. Then make a list of your bills. The next thing you should probably do is to look for a job so you can pay the attorney.

  2. Find a local bankruptcy attorney in your area, most will see you on a free first consultation. They will need to look at the last 6 months of pay stubs, even if you have missed work, bring what you have, these have to be submitted to the courts. They will need a list of all your debts, assets, and the last 4 years of taxes. Once they review, they will be able to tell you what chapter bankruptcy you qualify for. A bankruptcy can run you anywhere from 800-1500 to file, and a bankruptcy attorney will be able to tell you what you may or may not pay to help with the retainer fees. Most retainer fees need to be paid up front before filing. Good Luck!

  3. Many bankruptcy attorneys offer the first appointment for free.  Go see one.

  4. Medical bills can be paid off over a long period of time. Any payment you send to them, they half to accept. Send them $50 a month. They won't like it but they can't turn you in to collections if you are making payments to them. That is a tough situation.
