Question:

About to loose my job....NEED ADVISE ASAP!!!!!!?

have been with my current employer for almost 4 years. I am a hard working, dedicated employee with no past preformance problems. I made a mistake with my bank (I am responsible for $28,500) and it caused the company to loose $5010.68. I am being told as we speak if they cannot find the error, they will just assume that I took the money and I will loose my job.

I have never, EVER stolen anything in my life! And I have been nothing but dedicated to this company. I asked if I could keep my job and just replace the money and they said no. I have a 1 year old son and my son's father was laid off from his job last month. He currently only receives $188 every 2 weeks for unemployment. So I am basically the only real provider at the moment. If I loose my job I will loose my apartment, my car and not have any money to feed my family! So, on to my questions:

Given the situation at hand, if I get fired, do you think I will be able to collect unemployment until I can find a new job? Also, would I qualify for any sort of public assistance while on unemployment such as medical coverage for my son and possibly food stamps? Also, my son's father and I live together and he gives me every last dime he has so he is contributing as much as he can at the moment so I am afraid if I go to public aid, since we are not legally married yet, they may go after him for money or child support. Any information you can give me would be helpful. Thank you!!!

AND I AM NOT TRYING TO BE LAZY AND SIT AROUND AND JUST COLLECT AND MOOCH OFF OF THE GOVERNMENT EITHER. I AM SIMPLY MAKING SURE MY FAMILY CAN SURVIVE WHILE ME AND MY SON'S FATHER FIND WORK.

  1. You can apply for unemployment, but you won't be able to collect. Your employer has already told you they will assume you stole the money if the error isn't found. ...and your employer will tell this to unemployment when they call to verify the termination reason which will result in your claim being denied.

Once you've lost your job you should be able to qualify for public assistance...food stamps, WIC cards, etc.

For work, I would highly suggest going to a temp agency. I did temp work for a number of years. It helped me gain experience and be out in the working world (just out of high school at the time). The agency I worked for was Kelly Temporary Services. They kept me pretty busy and most of the time were giving me my next assignment the same day or the following business day. Some agencies also offer free classes to their temps for commonly used programs in the work place like Microsoft Office.

You might also consider going to your unemployment office's career placement center. They have counselors on site who can assist you with a job search, writing a resume, etc. The center might also offer free classes or sources for free classes so you can update your skills.

  2. do you know what the error is pertaining to? I think you should try to figure out where and when the error may have occurred so that they have a better chance of finding it.  Also, you should request that a third party look for it and not just them.  But in a nice way without sounding like you are accusing them of anything.

and can I just correct your grammar?  you should write:  lose my job, not "loose my job".  because Loose is like your pants are loose (not tight).

  3. Ok, if you get fired... yes, you can collect umemployment (usually through the state's workforce center (located in nearly most towns in that state).

Yes, you can collect food stamps from your local DHS office.  If you go to get HUD or some housing help, it might take months to get approved for assistance.  They will not collect child support from your boyfriend/fiance/etc.  Simply, if he is living with you, you will have to list him and his income on the paperwork.  But like I said, apartment housing has a shorter wait, and you can choose to fill out for two different types of apt help.  Either you choose where to live and they pay up to an amount, or you choose to live in set properties that they have chosen.

Now for HUD, getting a house for rent takes the longest time.  You can be on a waiting list for up to 2 years.

You may be entitled for some utility expense help, but thats ultimately up to the Apt/HUD authorities and is generally only for extreme cases.

Your child should be able to have Medicaid too.  Talk to your local (or county) health department.  They can hook your son up with medicaid.

Lastly, look for a temporary job if worst comes to worst.  Anything is better than nothing.  I would start my job search now or within a week.  If you do get fired, that way you can call the places back that you have applied to.

    Good Luck!

*Also, local churches sometimes have food drives, sell discounted food, and may give you a temporary loan for a bill.  Also, most towns have a "soup kitchen".  Every little bit helps, so I thought I would include these.

  4. If it was a bank error, you should be able to clear everything up.  Don't you keep copies of deposits and payments??  Your employer has obviously lost trust in you and would not want to keep you around unless you can prove it was a mistake.

If you get fired you cannot collect unemployment.  The moment you apply the unemployment office sends a letter to your employer and your employer can deny the claim.

  5. You can probably qualify for unemployed for the rest of them, possibly.

Don't worry though, if you've done nothing wrong, then they'll find the problem.

  6. They will just assume you took it if they can't come up with another explanation? That sounds kind of odd. Have you done anything shady in the past?

Dont they have tons of security cameras at banks? Or is it a cash office at a store or something?

  7. Well, I hope that the problem will get sorted out and you won't have to worry about it.  But in case it doesn't:

Yes, you should be able to qualify for foodstamps and medical coverage and some sort of unemployment assistance.  Don't worry about them coming after your son's father for money.   He's already living with you and giving you all his money, so they won't try to make him pay child support or anything.  You would have to be the one to initiate any child support hearings.  Don't worry; something will work out and there are places to get help.  Don't be afraid to ask, and don't be afraid to sign up for public assistance.  I wish you all the best!!

  8. Before you worry about any public assistance try to find the error. How did it cause the company to lose the 5000? I am assuming they don't just hand you over a large lump sum of unaccounted for cash so go through the receipts and see were the discrepancy is. Generally money leaves a paper trail, follow it and see where it is off.

**If you are terminated your company can deny the unemployment. HR receives the request when you apply if they believe you stole from the company that is all they need to put down and you most likely will be denied***
