Question:

About to show in reining, do I need chaps?

I know, silly question, but I've never done reining before. It's always been Western Pleasure, trail riding, Hunt Seat, etc.

Looking into costumes I know a lot of people wear chaps, but I've seen some without. So do you really need chaps, or is it just an option? And if you don't do points get deducted or you're not a 'favorite'?

If it helps I'm female. I know that men and women have 2 different wardrobes so thought it may be useful...

Thanks!

  1. I don't think it really matters.  If you want to wear them go ahead, if not I wouldn't.  Just make sure your clothes are clean and you are well groomed like your horse.

  2. If you are just starting out in reining and only doing local shows then you will not need to wear chaps. I am pretty sure that chaps are no longer compulsory for any western or reining shows but if you are competing at a higher level then you probably should wear them to look professional in the arena. In reining you are judged on your run, not on what you wear which can sometimes affect you in the western pleasure circuit and there is a set judging criteria for each manouver so personal opinions do not come into it as much. Good luck and have fun showing. I think you will find that reining shows are much more laid back than pleasure shows plus you have the added benifit of not having to change three times in one day.

  3. I think it would be an option if you have seen some people not wearing them. So I wouldn't worry about it too much

  4. Chaps are optional at all levels - whether NRHA (National Reining Horse Association), AQHA, or your local open show organization.

However, most people do wear chaps as they help you to stick in the saddle better.  Lord knows in reining doing slides and spins we need to stay in the saddle.

Basically, clean and neat is the requirement.  You must have boots, pants, western shirt with collar and sleeves (can be the modern ones with huge collar and zipper or a regular button up one), and a hat.  Chaps are optional.

    Best wishes...
