  1. The most common type of train accident usually doesn't hurt the train much at all. That's because the train collides with vehicles at the tens of thousands of roads that cross train tracks around the world.

  2. Most accidents relating to trains are not, in fact, train accidents.  They are pedestrians or vehicle drivers being exceptionally stupid... and the fact that they are stupid around a train instead of around a cliff, is often blamed wrongly on the train.

There are also true "train accidents", where the train had a problem itself. In the USA, the Federal Railroad Administration keeps records on most such accidents and the National Transportation Safety Board investigates the biggies.
