I want to upgrade from XP to Vista, and I think I know that I'll have to back-up my files (like Word documents and my family photos) otherwise they'll be gone, am I right? But will my installed applications, applications' settings and settings vanish too? I hope not.

  1. Yes your settings will be wiped if you upgrade from XP to Vista unless you use the files and settings wizard to transfer your settings on XP to Vista.

  2. You should definitely backup your data when doing any upgrade.

You have two options with Vista, to upgrade/update or do a clean install.

If you update it will just upgrade you leaving all your My Documents and Programs etc.

If you do a fresh install of Vista then you will need to install everything again.

Doing an update/upgrade can sometimes be troublesome and not always work as well after but does leave your files and programs intact.

Doing a clean/fresh install will work better and faster but more of a pain as you have to reinstall your programs etc.

The choice is yours but do remember to backup your stuff either way.

  3. DON'T DO IT... Vista is designed for the DUAL CORE PROCESSORS... if is not intended for any MPU that is over about one year old.  If you load it on your XP machine, it will never work right and you will probably have some programs that WON'T WORK with Vista.  Haven't you READ any of the horror stories people tell about loading Vista on their XP machines?

  4. What I would do is put all my data and file onto an external drive or burn it to CDs then install vista and put the data back on afterwards.
