Question:

About using contacts...

I've never used contacts before, but I really want to because I don't like wearing glasses like I do.

I've gone to the eye doctor on multiple occasions to try and put contacts in, but I couldn't.

Every time I try to touch my eye I just start to feel all stressed out. It's kinda weird. I start feeling really panicky, it's no wonder I can't seem to stop myself from blinking long enough to put in a contact lens.

Is this a normal reaction? Can anybody give me any advice? I would really appreciate it.

  1. I am turning 37 this year and have been using contacts since I was 11.  It is normal.  The first week my apprehension went from really bad to simple nervousness.  Then for about 3 weeks it took me anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes just to put one in.  Now it takes a quick second.

It should pass unless you are one of those who cannot get over the fact that you are intentionally putting a foreign object in your eye.  When I wore contacts the first time my prescription was a minus 3.5 on each eye. It is now a minus 11.5 so slowly it became a necessity for me to wear contacts and that helped me get over it.

  2. It is natural to not want things to come towards your eye.  I recommend getting in front of a mirror in your bathroom, clean your hands well, wet your fingertip and practice touching the white part of your eye while looking in the mirror.  This should help you get slightly more used to something coming towards your eye.  Good luck and just keep practicing!

  3. Ya, its normal some people have more of an apprehension initially. Took me a good day or two to feel comfortable. Use a mirror and just relax that way your eyes dont spasm shut. Once you get used to wearing them its becomes second nature and you wonder why you ever wore glasses.

So....relax and practice you'll get it.
