  1. I'm not sure when they can begin to mate, but to be safe, 3 years is a good bet. By then they should be fully grown and developed.


  2. Fillies (young female horses) can start coming into season at just over a year old, most start by the time they are two.

    However, this doesn't mean it's a good idea to breed them so young. If a horse is bred as a 2 year old she will foal as a three year old, which is like a 16 year old girl having a baby. At three years old most horses are not physically or mentally mature, and while they CAN raise a foal at that age, they probably shouldn't have to.

    The best time to breed a mare is once she is finished growing, trained, and proven through showing or working that she is worth being bred.

  3. colts, may sometimes be physically capable of reproduction at approximately 18 months but in practice are rarely allowed to breed until a minimum age of 3 years, especially females.  

  4. 9-11 months.
