I'm from Australia and a lot of people expect me to do a VCE except i don't really know which one to do and i don't really want to do one. I was thinking of doing a VET, VET AFL to be exact seeing that I'm really good at sport. Which gets me to the question what I really want to know, is there any advantage on your ENTER score if I do a VCE in year 10 or is the only advantage is that you will be ready for it in the years to come, like managing homework. Also can I get a good score on a VET like as good as a VCE on my ENTER score.

  1. There is no advantage on your Enter to doing a VCE subject in year 10, unless you carry on to complete units 3 & 4 in year 11 (I didn't... so I lacked the benefits, but it still prepared me for my VCE subjects in year 11).

If you do carry on, it becomes a 6th subject for your Enter score. I can't remember the exact percentages, but for your Enter the score is derived from your English mark, then the next best three, and then 10% (i think) of your fifth subject. If you do a VCE subject in year 10 & 11, they also take 10% of this mark towards your enter.

However, I'm fairly sure this also works for VET subjects, and you also can get a certificate out of some VET subjects. So, if you're interested and enjoy a VET subject, the benefits of doing that probably outweigh the benefits of doing a VCE subject that you don't enjoy.

Maybe try talking to a course advisor at your school, they should be able to give you some direction, and also tell you what is offered at your school

  2. I'm guessing you are in year nine...so it is nice to see you are already thinking about it! It is never too early to get an idea.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) in the VCE program combines general VCE studies with vocational training and experience in the workplace. Schools are able to offer senior secondary students programs selected from the range of industry areas approved by your states curriculum and assessment authority.

As well as allowing students to experience study in a career they may be considering, all VET programs contribute to the eligibility requirements for VCE/VCAL and [most] VET programs also contribute to the student's ENTER score.

    Benefits of VET programs are:

They assist students to become more ‘job ready’ thereby increasing their employment prospects

They form part of recognised pathways to further education and training

Upon successful completion, students receive a nationally accredited qualification

They contribute to the eligibility requirements for both VCE and VCAL

This demonstrates that your study path may not necessarily effect your enter score positivlely or negativly. You would have to get in touch with your VET and VCE advisor, (school careers advisor or even an executive) who would be able to contact someone in the area. Another option is to attend an information session about VET and VCE, and ask someone there.

    Good luck!
