  1. Most organic gardeners like to use raised beds if that is what you mean. The raised bed helps because you can work the upper layer of soil more easily so when your turn it in the spring your not bending as much and you can concentrate your compost to the areas where the plants will grow and not the path where you will walk.

You're suppose to keep the beds narrow so you can weed from either side of the bed without stepping on the bed. A higher bed means less bending and makes it much easier to weed.  Your soil will remain uncompressed which means the roots will have an easier time growing and so your plants will be at least 30% bigger and may be as much as 60% bigger. Bigger plants mean higher yields. You see plants expend a lot of energy to force their roots through the soil but when you use raised beds they can put their energy into the plant and the fruit they bare- that is bigger and more tomatoes!

You also can plant your vegetables about 30-50% closer (than seed companies recommended)  to one another because they have more verticle room for the roots to grow. Your watering gets more focused in a smaller area so less water is used and since the soil is not compressed the water permiates the soil faster and concentrates better around the roots more. It really a smarter way to grow  with better yields in smaller spaces.
