Question:

Above ground pool site prep question?

Well I’ve bought myself an above ground pool that’s a 13x24ft oval. The pool is going on a preexisting pool site. But the plastic is all torn up and weeds have taken it pretty much over. I plan to use a chemical called Zap It to kill everything including Nut Grass. I also intent to lay down new plastic and use more sand. My question is should I use masonry sand or fill sand? And how many yards will I need delivered to fill in a 13x24 ft area that’s 4-6 inches deep? I’m a fairly hand guy but this is my first time putting together a pool so any advice is welcomed. Hints/tips. Thanks to all that respond

  1. I'd use masonry sand since it is screened. Fill sand may contain small stones. You'll need about 5 ton, or 3 cubic yards, of sand.

  2. We are getting ready to get a  15'X 42" pool. Someone told me you need it at least three inches thick. So we are thinking about getting five ton (our ground is very unlevel). If there is any left the kids can use it to play in. Hope this helps.

  3. Use masonry sand since they are finely screened and stones, rubbles and scraps are already removed. If the plastic sheet is 6 ft wide then you need around 32 yards and that includes the overlap and some allowance for slack. I hope you could find a plastic sheeting that is 14-15 feet wide then you will have no problem about the overlap and all you need is 8-9 yards including the allowance for slack. Hope I computed it right.

  4. Use masonary sand. I used 30# roofing felt under the sand and extended it out 2 feet past the edge of the pool. My first pool had a weed grow into the liner from the edge so I learned quickly.

  5. masonry sand.

  6. Masonry sand.

After you level your sand, spray it good with water then tap it down to pack it.  Do this at least 2 or 3 times.  If not, the sand will shift and you will have foot print holes under your liner.

The size of your pool I would get at least three other men to assist you.

Once pool is set up, add one inch of water then re-align liner.  Once more then that much water is in you will never move it.

    Good luck
