Abraham Ancer takes halfway lead at the 110th Western Amateur
Abraham Ancer fired a bogey-free four-under par in the second round of the 110th Western Amateur to take a one-stroke lead over a group of three players on August 1, 2012.
Before coming to the Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, he stated that he had been playing brilliantly right from the start of the 2012 season. However, he always finds himself unlucky, as he falters on a few holes and ends up falling out of contention.
However, it did not happen at Exmoor. He got off to a confident start and recorded three birdies on the front nine to go three-under par for the round. Another birdie on the back nine allowed him to surge to the top of the leaderboard with a seven-under
par overall score.
“Yesterday I struggled a little off the tee, but today it was much better,” Ancer said. “And then I hit my irons really well today so I had a lot of confidence. I hit a lot of fairways and was able to go at the flag just about every time and give myself
good looks for birdie”.
Meanwhile, the overnight leader Curtis Thompson, elder brother of LPGA star Alexis “Lexi” Thompson, carded a one-under par 71 to slip down and share the second place.
According to him, he did not play well during the second round. He told that his shots were going all over the course and he was not able to find ways of creating birdie chances.
“I wasn’t on the golf course where I could give myself a chance to score,” said Thompson, a sophomore at LSU. “I was pretty much all over the place. So, for as bad as I hit it, 71 is a pretty good score”.
Chris Williams and Lorens Chan were the other two players who joined Curtis with six-under par and four-under par score, respectively.
Williams and Cameron Smith shot the best rounds of the day. Smith recorded six birdies in a bogey-free round. On the other hand, Williams managed to score nine birdies in his round. However, he also had a bogey and a double bogey registered on his scorecard.
