Question:

Abreva and canker sore on the lip?

My job is so boring. I just sit and do nothing for hours until a customer shows up and then I make sure they're who they are and send them through so I have a lot of time where I twiddle my fingers and unfortunately I bite my lip (eh, it pays well and has benefits so it's ok for now...). Sometimes the inside but then I start biting the inner edge of my lip and then I bite further right on the lip. I'm very prone to canker sores usually when stressed. Since this one is not in my mouth I've been using Abreva on it. I have no idea if it will work but it does a good job of numbing the area. I know that stuff is for cold sores but if I don't put it on there I end up biting it more. So will it help heal it other than keeping me from biting it? Could it create a sterile environment on the area where applied to keep bacteria and such off of it? I did research and they said canker sores aren't cold sores (DUH!) and said nothing about it. Most canker sores are found inside the mouth so I'm guessing that's why there's no info since you shouldn't ingest Abreva. Anyone have experience with Abreva and these canker sores?

Thanks.

  1. I get cold sores on my mouth  when I'm stressed. Happens about twice a year.  Abreva cuts the healing time in half.  It's the best over the counter medication for cold sores there is. A canker sore is inside the mouth so do not use Abreva on it as I'm sure you already know. Abreva targets the type of herpes virus that causes cold sores so it's not going to work on a canker sore and you'll get no benefit from it and it's expensive. Keep your lips moist with a chapstick to keep them from drying out as dryness will irritate a sore.

  2. I wouldnt use abreva. i get those ALL the time, and theyre not cold sores. theyre cankers, and im sorry to say, but there's no superquick reliever. go to a CVS, and  get some ANBISOL. its amazing. just rub a little on your canker eery 2 hours and it will be gone within about 2-3 days.

    good luck

  3. HERPIES!!

  4. Herpes is can be genetic, if you have the bacteria in your mouth to cause sores like that it is a form of herpes, and yes it's contagious.  No you don't have have s*x to get it, my niece has it and she is 5 , it runs on that side of the family.

You get a sore in your mouth it last days and is painful, I get a sore in my mouth its gone in hours.  Trust me ,it is a form of Simplex One.  Ask your doctor. Outside of your mouth is a cold sore, and yes its triggered by food and stress.  Most foods that can cause a break out is chocolate, nuts, citrus, even the sun can cause it.

  5. i actually did put Abreva on my canker sores and they were in my mouth. It kinda doesnt work because of the saliva in ur mouth...it just tends to wash it away so theres really no point. What i do is grab a paper towel...soak it in cold water...and place it where the canker sore is. That way the canker sore is less irratable and its less noticeable. Keep the paper on as long as u can and repeat...good luck and yea it sucks

  6. A canker sore on the outside of the lip is a cold sore. Abreva works great! I usually put some on my lip before the cold sore appears. I know they are coming when I feel a little feverish after stress or a poor nights sleep.

The pictures you posted were of cancer sores and cold sores yes. The cold sore picture is only the first stage of cold sore. I have had cold sores almost completely bypass the swelling phase and go strait to the ulcer phase. Cold sores that are healing look like ulcers. That is the most contagious time. I never had a cold sore until the age of 27 after I had a near fatal case of chicken pox.

BTW chicken pox is herpes. So is measles. Cold sores are very common.  There are worse things in the world you could be infected with. Just face the music and accept that you have a cold sore.

Why are you asking the yahoo forum anyway since you have all those pictures and you have doctor relatives? You seem like an expert. You didn't even need advice really.

The mayo clinic defines a canker sore as occuring on the inside of the lip not the outside.

  7. You seemed to have answered your own question.

"Since this one is not in my mouth I've been using Abreva on it'

" Most canker sores are found inside the mouth"

What you have is NOT a canker sore, although you seem to already know this.  What you have is probably just a cut because of biting your lip.  Or, you do have a cold sore, although you also said thats not what you have....which you most likely do have.

What I recommend is a cotton ball soaked in Listerine applied to the sore as often as possible.  I'm a chronic canker sore sufferer, and this not only numbs the sore but speeds up healing.
