  1. The idea is that away from the one whom one loves, one pines and yearns and fantasizes and idealizes the inamorata.

All that presumes a relationship to begin with. The other possibility is that one forgets. Perhaps then it wasn't love.

  2. What it means is that when someone you care about is absent from you or vice versa, your heart aches for them, you feel more love for them in your heart because you miss them so.

Absence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder (1949)

    Dean Martin

    If you should leave me

I know it would grieve me

    So honey please remember

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

    For somebody else

    I love you dearly

    I'm yours sincerely

    But honey please remember

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

    For somebody else

When the cat's away the mice will play

    I don't say I will but still I may

I may be blue away from you

And then again I may be g*y

When I get fretful I get forgetful

    So honey please remember

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

    For somebody else

When the cat's away the mice will play

    I don't say I will but still I may

I may be blue away from you

And then again I may be g*y

When I get fretful I get forgetful

    So honey please remember

Absence makes the heart grow fonder

    For somebody else

    For somebody else

But the original quote is said to have come from:

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

    Sextus Propertius, Elegies

    Roman poet (? - 15 BC)

    A later quote:

Thomas Hayne Bayly -  Isle of Beauty · Excerpt from In Defense of Women

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

    Another version:

"Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but presence makes the heart grow stronger."

  3. This is sort of in the 'you don't know what you've got until it's gone' yarn of platitudes.

Picture this: You're in love with someone, and they get shipped off to go fight in a war of sorts. During their absence, you will find that you miss even the littlest things about them, and find that the things you didn't like about them (they forget to put the toilet seat down, etc) pale in comparison to the things you love about them (they know what to cook for you when you've had a hard day, etc).

Basically, the more you miss someone you love, you'll find that you love and appreciate them even more. Even people you strongly dislike are  more likeable when you're not around them (that makes even more sense to me)

  4. Well I'll try and explain it this way, imagine that your significant other has to go away for a little while, eventually you reallize how much you miss them (this can go along with you never know what you've got till its gone) you realize how much they mean to you and how much you need them, you start to yearn for them. When they finally come back you love them and appreciate them more because you see how it is living without them
