Absence of leading golfers at the Farmers Insurance Open benefits Mickelson and Watson
Due to the absence of world leaders, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson are now considered the hottest golfers ready to outshine their rivals at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Both players are capable of benefiting from the situation. The tournament, which is scheduled from January 26 to 29, 2012, at the Torrey Pines, is expected to go in favour of both the Americans.
Tiger Woods, another American golfer, is back to his performance after being out of the tournament for two years.
Tiger Woods is in Abu Dhabi and playing at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. He preferred the European Tour event over the Professional Golf Association Tour event.
Similarly, there are other renowned players as well, who are not playing at the Torrey Pines.
Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer are some of those participating in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
Mickelson and Watson's presence in California produces ample opportunities for them to lead over others. Both of them were the leaders in the 2011 tournament.
Watson was on the first and Mickelson was on the second position of the leader board. They can repeat this winning bond again.
Watson scored massive strokes at the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open. He won the title by one stroke over Mickelson. Watson scores include 16-under par and 272 in total and earned $1,044,000.
He also has three PGA titles to his name and currently ranks 21st in the Official World Golf rankings. His lead over other professional golfers speaks loudly in favour of him.
"I'm feeling good," Watson told the reporters before preparing for the opening round. "I've played well here a few times, so it's always nice to come back here”.
He added, "I think I've top 10'ed here three times... it's the North course that I usually don't shoot very low on, but last year I shot low on it, so that helped me out a lot".
Similarly, Mickelson is also capable of leading the prestigious tournament of Farmers Insurance Open. He was only one stroke behind the leader in 2011.
He has won 39 PGA tour events in total and is well known for winning four major titles as well. His ranking is also impressive, as he ranks 15th in the OWGR.
