  1. I wouldn't bother replacing as it's a false economy.

If it's a commercial building or residential and rented out, you now have a duty under the Asbestos Regulations to keep a log of where asbestos is and manage it...

If anything goes wrong with your electrics, an IEEE electrician is not allowed to effect a repair on old style fuse boxes, so if you do a middle of the night call-out for something simple, it could end up costing an arm and a leg!  Suggest you budget for renewal of fuse box before anything fails.

  2. The new ones still could have asbestos.

It's not illegal and still being mined and used.

There is just certain areas and uses it is no longer appropriate. It may be still allowed in fuse holders.

    I didn't know they did.

The above answerer is right about contacting the manufacturer to find out.

  3. Getting a bit paranoid are'nt you?  There will be no loose asbestos fires and it will be in a closed box. No problem.

  4. Probably fibreglass. You could always ask MEM.

  5. Ask MEM But whatever you do DONT DISTURB IT!!!!! it could give you serious health problems in years to come!!!! Its very dangerous indeed.

  6. all Bakelite had asbestos to some existent. this was used mainly as a binding for the material. the new ones will have Fiberglas and or ceramic.
