Question:

Absinthe: Worth the $ ?

They started selling it in liquor stores in Oregon about two weeks ago but I haven't tried it yet. Is it all hype, or does it have some redeeming qualities that make it worth $60-$150?

  1. Trick is to get some with low alcohol content. I drank the real thing in Prague but d**n, I was totally wasted before I could notice the effects. You kind of get this colorful visual rippling thing going on. Pretty cool. It's a nice beverage too on a hot day. Kind of like pastisse or ouzo, if you like the taste of liquorice. Throw it on the rocks with water. You can also use an absinthe spoon with sugar, which makes it turn from green to white. Kind of a fun party trick. Especially once everyone's seeing the green fairy afterward!

  2. It's thujone free! Thanks to the FDA. You can buy the real stuff in Europe online, but you must pay shipping of course. Thujone levels in Europe are > 35mg in the amer classification and there are some with 100mg thujone.

"It's the myth and legend right now that everyone's focused on but they're not really focused on what ultimately got it approved and it was the removal of the parts that they thought were the mind altering aspects of that product," says Robert Benedetto with the State Liquor Authority

  3. dude it's totally worth it. i went to Amsterdam a couple years ago, and it's legal there. I did one shot of it and I was BOMBED. it was such an awesome feeling. better than being drunk. i was seeing things..

I live in new york.. I hope they start selling it in here soon otherwise I might be coming out to visit you in oregon..

  4. the only real absinth can be bought in europe(specificly czech republic) and should hav a Thujone content of 10mg/kg also small particals of sediment in the bottle mean it is genuine

  5. definately not... i have tried it several times.. in prague, france, and amsterdam... it had no great redeeming qualities other than being a high proof alcohol... i assume the kind they sell in oregon lacks thujone the supposed "active ingredient"... people talk about hallucination. colors and bullsh*t.. i have tried and tried and tried... definately all hype... i brought back a bottle and drank it to myself throughout an evening... still no rainbow colors or green fairies...

  6. Hallucinations are all hype and a high thujone/wormwood content to hallucinate is all hype too. I enjoy absinthe for its flavor (but many people don't), and I think it's worth the price. Well, not really; because I'm cheap, I think it should be cheaper. But I still buy bottles. I don't think it's a waste of money to try something new. If you don't like it, you never have to buy it again. If you do, great! Regardless, you can still have a good time when you get drunk off your *** from it.

Batgirl, stop spreading wrong information!!! Absinthe in the US is *NOT* thujone free. All they did in the US was set a 10mg per liter limit. US Absinthe contains up to 10mg of thujone, and good absinthe contains 10-15mg of thujone. Furthermore, in your last answer, you used the DICTIONARY to tell her how preban absinthe tasted! You think the *dictionary* has more credit on the taste of absinthe than a group of experts who have sampled actual preban absinthe! More thujone/wormwood than 10-15mg makes a very bitter drink, and good absinthe should not be bitter. Preban absinthe was not very bitter.

Absinthe in both the US and Europe make it to the same, 10-15mg (up to 10 in the US), standard as preban absinthe. The only difference is that in Europe, they are allowed to sell high thujone absinthe under the guise of a "Bitter". And they sell to people who think it will make them hallucinate, which it won't. But plenty of European absinthe is made with 10-15mg of thujone because that's considered a good amount, and it's been that way since before it was banned.

  7. you wanna see colers do acid or mushrooms lol sorry i had to all this talk about colers and stuff

  8. Maybe the European stuff but nothing here stateside as far as I know.  My cousin bought a few bottles after reading about it in a maxim.  He followed the recipes and everyone was making faces and hating it.  I had a few drinks of it but I am a liquor drinker and a fan of licorice.  I didn't see anything crazy but I was mixing it with sprite by the end of the night.  If you are willing to pay over $60 for a bottle, get a good whiskey.
