Absinthe brings Donald McCain the M&S Money Handicap at Chester on 10th May
The unprecedented success of the highly accomplished trainer, Donald McCain keeps stretching wings. His under charge, Absinthe, King’s Best’s six-year-old bay gelding out of mare, Triple Try, added yet another victory on the record.
He won the M&S Money Handicap at Chester over a mile and two and a half furlong on 10th May. With Graham Lee onboard, Absinthe, led the 5/2 joint favourite runner up of the race, King’s Warrior, by one and a half length.
The other joint favourite, Robemaker, ended fourth on the line-up of six contestants.
Graham Lee made his mount pick up pace early during the race and stayed prominent throughout the track. Switching from hurdles to flat found the six-year-old in a form that was almost perfect and defied all the possibilities of missing the race.
The winning jockey commented:"This time last year I was going round Aintree. It's mad, but I'm really enjoying it. It's still the same - you're only as good as your horse. I'm very thankful to everyone that's supporting me. It's gorgeous jumping ground!"
McCain said: "He's won his novice hurdles and he's handicapping now and he has a fair mark. This is our local track along with Bangor so we thought we'd come here and give it a go. Doing our job they might just learn to cope with this ground and that gives
them an advantage.”
The trainer was not only pleased with the horse but was immensely delighted at the high deliverance of the genius of the profession, Graham Lee.
“He's ridden some good winners for us, a National winner and a Galway Hurdle winner.” Donald McCain told.
This was Absinthe’s sixth outing during the new season and the third victory. His seasonal debut found him to be the 10/11 favourite winner of the Matthew Clark Novices’ Hurdle on 6th January at Bangor-On-Dee over two miles and a furlong.
His second success of the season was in the Wetherby Racecourse Showground For Outdoor Events Conditional Jockeys’ Novices’ Hurdle on 30th March at Wetherby. This time too he won as the favourite of the race.
Any future plans for the winner have not been made public yet.
