  1. To set everyone straight, you may be able to buy "absinthe" in the US, but it is NOT real absinthe.  Maybe the advertising/bottle fools some, but it is not real.  Maybe some people find it on the black market, I don't know, but you can not get it at the liquor store.  I have never looked at home brewing kits so I am not sure if they are legit or not.

It is a blend of 6-10 (depending on the exact recipe) herbs distilled in alcohol.  The herbs all work synergistically together to mildly poison the liver and give the high.  It is toxic in large amounts and since there would be pretty bad and irreversible problems if anyone could get their hand on it, it is not legal.

The sugar cube was part of the style, and specifically because these thujone rich herbs are very bitter.

  2. I just want to say that Trid is exactly right.

  3. Not at all.

They're either a collection of herbs that you soak in some kind of alcohol.

Or, they're some kind of extract/"essence" that you mix in with alcohol.  Either way, it's just a cheap attempt that doesn't work to make absinthe.  If it was that easy, there would be tons more on shelves and it sure as heck wouldn't be as expensive as it is.

Besides, if you're looking for a cheap trip, absinthe is not the way to do it.  You're not going to hallucinate or see fairies.  It's never been that way, despite what all the cheesy movies and internet hype says.

If you're interested in genuine absinthe, it's not cheap, but you can get the real thing in the US (and there will be plenty of people who will try to tell you it's not the real thing).  There's half a dozen brands you can find on store shelves...of varying quality, from really good to downright c**p.

If you're interested in getting trashed quickly, you're better off shooting 151 or doing Jaeger-bombs and getting over with far less expensively.  Besides, if you don't care for the taste of black liquorice, you may not enjoy absinthe.
