  1. It, as stated above, can be either a bank-breaker or not. For beginners I would actually suggest buying good, used equipment. Either E-bay or Craigslist will do fine. No official classes needed. I've never met anyone to my knowledge that have had "official" archery classes. You do need to find an archery mentor though. To go through the basics and fine tune your technique. But Its absolutely the most rewarding hunting experience i've ever had in the field.

  2. I did archery in high school, for one semester -- and then didn't even think about it until at least 15 years later. So starting at 16 really isn't "late" at all.

    Cost for a beginner... For a good bow made for people your "size" (age 14 to "adult"), there is the "Bullseye" takedown recurve at $110

    I suggest starting with 20-25 pounds of draw weight.

    There are some good wooden arrows available, good enough for beginners, anyway;

    also do a web search for "Nirk Arrows" and you should be able to find some inexpensive arrows to learn with.

    If you just want to try it before committing to the sport, visit your nearest archery range/club and ask if you can try it. There is usually some equipment on hand for such things, and there should be someone willing to help. Two places to look for a range/club are

    http://www.usarchery.org/

    and

    http://sca.org/geography/welcome.html

    (the first website should be self-explanitory; the second you will have to find the group for your area and ask about archery). If you go through US Archery you will most likely have to pay for formal, professional instruction; the SCA archery instruction is informal, but usually free. You can also look in your local yellow pages/phone book for "archery".

    Here is a website where you can learn the basics of archery:

    and an "Archer's Reference":

    Good luck, and have fun!

  3. To buy the basics brand new will cost about $1000.  But, you should be able to find perfectly serviceable used equipment for under $200.  Get some advice from somebody that is knowledgeable  You won't really need lessons.  It only takes about 15 minutes to show you enough to get you started.  To get good enough to hit a target or to be able to hit a deer can be learned in just a couple weeks.  I took up archery when I was 40.  Learning to use a bow has been great.  Now, I only hunt with a bow.  Amazingly good hunting weapon.
