Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - A battle on the brink of thin ice
After an important but boring Brazilian Grand Prix, it seems that the 2010 Drivers’ championship is on the brink of thin ice at the moment as the two
Red Bull drivers, Lewis Hamilton and current championship leader Fernando Alonso remain in the 2010 drivers’ championship chase. The top four drivers will battle it out at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend, which is set to take place at the Yas Marina
Circuit.
With just one race left in the 2010 season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is going to be a race worth watching as the grand finale will determine a new Formula
1 world champion since Jenson Button, the defending world champion, is now out of the run mathematically after the Brazilian Grand Prix. It seems that he was struggling to cope with the top contenders since the past 4 races but his championship run might have
survived if he managed to finish the Korean Grand Prix with at least some decent points.
Fernando Alonso, the current championship leader, has to be the most favourite pick out of the top four since he has been the strongest driver since
the second half of the 2010 season began and since he has an 8 point lead over Mark Webber - who is currently in 2nd place – Fernando has a mental advantage over the rest of the drivers as well and it seems that Red Bull might seem a little more
uncomfortable and nervous than the Spaniard.
Secondly, since Alonso is a two-time world champion, he is aware of what a driver has to do to attain the championship while both of the Red Bull drivers
have never been in this situation and both of them are contending for their first championship title. However, after securing the Constructors’ title mathematically at the Brazilian Grand Prix, Red Bull has this confidence boost over the rest of the teams
as they have now been labelled as the best team on the track statistically and with reference to pace; therefore, the team will head to Abu Dhabi with their heads held high believing that they can win the title.
The only thing that will worry Fernando is that if the two Red Bulls qualify ahead of him. It is quite clear that Sebastian Vettel will let Mark Webber
win but only if Alonso is in 3rd or 4th place behind him. Sebastian Vettel is currently in 3rd place, just 15 points short of the championship leader, and since Sebastian won the previous race at the Brazilian Grand Prix, the
German will head to Abu Dhabi thinking about himself rather than Mark Webber. However, Sebastian is aware that if there is no possibility of him winning the championship, he would have to let his teammate win the championship for the better of the team.
Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, is racing for himself only as his teammate is now out of the championship after his disappointing performance at the
Korean and Brazilian Grands Prix. Therefore, the defending world champion is expected to help his teammate at the grand finale at Abu Dhabi even though the odds are pretty much against Lewis. However, since he is still alive in the championship mathematically,
he is definitely going to try his best to secure the title for his team in any way possible. Lewis is currently 24 points adrift of the championship leader Fernando Alonso. McLaren's Lewis Hamilton is one of the most aggressive drivers in the sport currently
and since Formula 1 is one of the most unpredictable sports in the world, it is not easy to predict what the future holds for the drivers and teams.
It is going to be a groundbreaking race for sure, as it would be interesting to see how far each of the top three teams is willing to go to achieve the
ultimate goal in the sport.
