Abu Dhabi Grand Prix: Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher’s disappointing season ends hopelessly
A very disappointing season ends on a dismal note for the Mercedes GP driver Michael Schumacher. The last race of the 2010 season and the last hope of the driver to prove that he is still the same unbeatable driver diminished at
the very first minute of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Only at the first lap of the race, Force India driver Vitantonio Liuzzi and Schumacher collided with each other, thus ending the battle of the two right away.
Just a few moments after the green flag was seen – specifically, on turn 6 – Nico Rosberg nudged Schumacher and from the impact, Schumacher’s car spun around and was left on the track facing opposite to the rally of cars. Just
then Liuzzi rammed his Force India over the German's, settling his car on top of the Mercedes GP. Surely, it was one of the most horrific accidents of the season but both drivers were lucky enough to walk out of their cars without any aid.
A safety car soon rushed at the spot of the incident to clear off the debris as the battle continued among the rest of the 22 drivers.
After facing a long period of despair and disappointment, it was only at the last two rounds that the 41-year-old was able to perform well. The Japanese Grand Prix saw the driver finish at 6th place whereas at the Brazilian
Grand Prix last week he finished at 4th position. This ending not only marked his best for the season but also gave an impetus for a better upcoming season.
The seven-time world champion joined the track after a period of three years at the start of this season. His union with Mercedes GP, the winner of both the Drivers’ as well as the Constructors’ Championship last year under the
title of Brawn GP was welcomed whole-heartedly. His reputation combined with the successful debut season of the team received a lot of hype and fanfare but the fans got disappointed very soon. The team failed to provide the driver with a competitive car. Only
when the season reached its last leg did Schumacher started show the glimpse of the old racer but this last race left the fans disappointed once again.
The season has been wrapped up by the driver with 72 points under his belt standing at 9th place in the Drivers’ Championship.
However, despite all the ills and odds of the season, the driver is adamant to continue racing and is looking forward to a bright new start next season.
