My sister's gotta betta and she doesn't take care of it! I always feed it! Whenever she feeds it, she drops a pound of food in there! Its got a 5" bowl. Is that enough for a betta? Otherwise I've gotta 1ft vase.

  1. Betta fish can usually live in small places and don't need a big aquarium. You could try your vase if you think it will be a healthier home for your sister's Betta fish. Also, It can be very bad if she drops that much food in there so don't try that =]

  2. No bowls for Bettas. The absolute minimum tank size they can live in is 2.5 gallons with a filter and heater. They need slightly bigger tanks because this is where they live in the wild: http://www.cultureshocktherapy.com/pic/i...

They need a heater because they're tropical fish. They prefer the temperatures in the 75-80* F range. Without a heater, they won't be as active, they'll be more susceptible to diseases, and they won't show as much coloration as they would with a heater.

They need a filter since they are living creatures and produce waste. The filter (with established bacteria) will "eat" the ammonia and nitrites that its waste gives off.

  3. Zoo Tycoon is absolutely right. Bettas CAN live in tiny bowls, just not for very long. They are tropical fish and require heated water, 76-82 degrees.

Bettas breathe air from the surface of the water, so they need room at the top for respiration.

I agree that a 2.5 gallon tank is the smallest humane house for a single Betta.  While they don't have to have a filter, it certainly will help keep the water much cleaner.

Bettas can live for 5-7 years, if they are given the best environment - plenty of room, clean, dechlorinated water, and just one or two bites of food each day.  Otherwise, you will kill your fish fairly quickly.

  4. its a beta.A 5 inch bowl is fine.just don't put another one in there and you're golden

  5. In the vase he would feel more free and he would enjoy it more!!  The bowl will work, but he probably won't live as long and healthy life asa he would in the vase!
